Love Those Stillwater Skies

There’s something about the skies in Stillwater that makes you pause…even on your busiest days.
Are you a star gazer?
A weather watcher?
A sunset seeker?
Here, you can be all three.
I can’t tell you how many photos I’ve taken of the clouds rolling in, the stars stretching wide across the night, or those sunrises and sunsets that stop you in your tracks. It’s become a bit of a ritual—just looking up.
This all started long before Stillwater.
I grew up in Amarillo, TX—a place historically known as the Helium Capital of the World. I don’t pretend to understand all the science, but I do know helium played a role in space shuttles, and my dad spent his career working at a local plant. Shuttle launches weren’t just something you heard about—they were something you watched. Our TV would be on, and we’d all be gathered around. One of the coolest moments? My dad got to watch John Glenn return to space in 1998. That kind of thing sticks with you.
Looking up became part of who we were.
In the summers, the Big Dipper would sit perfectly above my childhood home. It was the first thing that greeted me after a night out with friends and well after curfew! Even now, no matter where I am, when I find it in the sky, I think of my parents. It’s grounding. Familiar. Home.
And for the longest time, I didn’t think any sky could compete with Amarillo’s wide-open horizon.
Then came Stillwater.
There’s something special here. Maybe it’s the way the light hits just right at the end of the day, or how the clouds seem to put on a show without warning. There are actual spots around town where people gather—not for an event, not for a game—but just to watch the sunset. And yes… I’ve been one of them.
One of my favorite places? Lake McMurtry.
Out on the water, sitting in a kayak, watching the sun dip low… and then suddenly, the sky catches fire. Colors you didn’t expect. Stillness you didn’t know you needed. It’ll take your breath away if you let it.
This may not be your typical real estate post—and that’s kind of the point. Sunsets and starry nights won’t add equity to your home. But they add something else. Something quieter. Something lasting.
Because sometimes the best part of where you live… is simply remembering to look up.
If you ever need a reminder, I’ve shared some of my favorite captures over the years on Instagram at @stillwaterskies.
Take a minute tonight. Step outside. Look up.
You just might fall in love with the sky all over again. ✨
